The global diagnostic imaging market is expected to grow from $20.7 billion in 2010 to $26.6 billion by 2016, at an estimated CAGR of 4.2% from 2011 to 2016. Increasing aging population and widening applications of diagnostic imaging due to continuous developments are predominantly driving the diagnostic imaging market. In addition, with increasing awareness amongst consumers regarding preventive care and development of products that result in harmless imaging is further receiving a boost.
The emerging trend that is catching interest of the players is fusion of nuclear imaging with different modalities of diagnostic imaging products. The merging of imaging modalities such as PET/CT, SPECT/CT, and MRI/PET help in providing full gamut of imaging scans through the same unit and at the same time. Further, portable diagnostic equipments are also facing an immense demand from physicians.

Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) Market Report - 2011 Edition

IVUS, which stands for Intravascular Ultrasound, is primarily used to view the coronary arteries from inside, with the help of high frequency sound waves. The primary use of IVUS is during Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) or angioplasty, as it provides a better understanding of blocked vessels, which allows for proper selection and placement of stents and other devices to restore blood flow at the site of the blockage. In fact, after stenting, the IVUS procedures are used to determine whether the stent has been placed correctly or not and thereby it helps to place the stent optimally and thereby reducing the need for re-stenosis. The IVUS procedures are generally performed in the catheterization laboratories or cath-labs.

Owing to the benefits provided by the IVUS technology in the medical field, the IVUS market has shown increasing growth in the past years. Despite increase in usage, the IVUS technology is still under penetrated worldwide, one of the main reasons for this being the fact that the reimbursement criteria for the IVUS is not flexible and the insurers do not generally reimburse the IVUS procedures. In Japan, where IVUS reimbursement criteria are flexible, the technology has high penetration rates and IVUS procedures are accompanied with a majority of the PCI procedures. The second largest market for IVUS in terms of usage is the US, followed by Europe. With the introduction of IVUS in the emerging countries, coupled with the increasing consumer income, increasing health awareness among the people and favoring demographics, such countries are expected to drive the IVUS market in coming years.

Low penetration of IVUS into the PCI procedures, increasing PCI and stent procedures, increasing risks of cardiovascular diseases, and ageing population are some of the factors which are likely to be responsible for the growth of IVUS market in future.

One of the major issues in the IVUS industry is its high pricing and lack of reimbursement facilities. This factor, coupled with the need for a cost effective medical treatment, are likely to negatively impact the use of IVUS technology. Also, the IVUS industry is highly regulated. IVUS industry is also facing a possible threat from the introduction of an almost similar procedure, OCT (or Optical Coherence Tomography), which is a medical imaging technique used to view the entire vessel wall. OCT has certain advantages over IVUS, one of the important ones include that OCT can determine the accurate depth of the plaque, whereas IVUS can not.

In association with analyzing the global IVUS market, the current report also discusses the major regional markets, including Japan, US, and Europe. The report delves into the factors impacting the industry. The profiles of Volcano Corporation, Boston Scientific, and Terumo Corporation are also being presented in the report, with a discussion of their business strategies.

IVUS market is the fastest growing segment of interventional cardiology. IVUS is primarily used during the stenting procedure in the percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The growth in this market is mainly based on the number of PCI procedures and stenting procedures or the stenting placements. More the stents being used, more would be the need of IVUS technology. IVUS technology is used to properly observe the placement of the stents, whether these are fully expanded and to see the built up of plaque. Here it scores over the traditional angiography technique. Angiography does not provide any cross-sectional information about the morphology of the plaque. Although angiography shows narrowings but it fails to differentiate plaque from the layers of the arteries. PCI penetration rate is the most important indicator of the IVUS market growth. Interestingly the penetration rate varies significantly among different regions. Largely the global markets are under-penetrated, with the exception of Japan where the penetration rates are very high. This variation in penetration corresponds directly with the reimbursement systems applicable in these markets or regions. Where there is no formal reimbursement structure, the penetration rates are low. Japan follows a well established reimbursement system, which is why the penetration rate is so high there. Another interesting feature of this market is that globally, and in most part of the world the market is shared by only two prominent players, Volcano Corporation and Boston Scientific. Only in Japan these companies face competition from another player, Terumo Corporation. The report analyzes the IVUS market looking at the market from global as well as regional perspective. The various market related factors are being interpreted either as market drivers or market limiters. The competition between Boston and Volcano is also being discussed separately highlighting their product features and their respective marketing efforts. Lastly the major three players, Volcano, Boston and Terumo are profiled with their business strategies. By combining SPSS Inc.’s data integration and analysis capabilities with our relevant findings, we have predicted the future growth of the industry. We employed various significant variables that have an impact on this industry and created regression models with SPSS Base to determine the future direction of the industry. Before deploying the regression model, the relationship between several independent or predictor variables and the dependent variable was analyzed using standard SPSS output, including charts, tables and tests.
